[audio]A.A.S. - AssociaciĆ³ D'Artistes Suburbans [HR033] - AAS
Another project by X.MARX. The secret reunion of March 1st, 2002, was surreptitiously recorded without the knowledge of the participants. Different parts of this recordings were sent to to a number of select musicians with the idea to create a base rhythms using the recorded voices a source material. Once developed, in each of this base rhythms was in turn incrusted a series of musical constructions compiled by the A.A.S...

[texts]Path correlations in a randomly oriented complete bipartite graph - Erik Aas
In a randomly oriented graph containing vertices $x$ and $y$, denote by $\{x\to y\}$ the event that there is a directed path from $x$ to $y$. We study the correlation between the events $\{x\to y\}$ and $\{y\to z\}$ for a (large) oriented complete bipartite graph with orientation chosen uniformly at random. We classify the cases of positive and negative correlation respectively in terms of the relative proportions of the sizes of the color classes of the graph.

[texts]Limit points of the iterative scaling procedure - Erik Aas
The iterative scaling procedure (ISP) is an algorithm which computes a sequence of matrices, starting from some given matrix. The objective is to find a matrix 'proportional' to the given matrix, having given row and column sums. In many cases, for example if the initial matrix is strictly positive, the sequence is convergent. In the general case, it is known that the sequence has at most two limit points...

[texts]Stationary probability of the identity for the TASEP on a ring - Erik Aas
Consider the following Markov chain on permutations of length $n$. At each time step we choose a random position. If the letter at that position is smaller than the letter immediately to the left (cyclically) then these letters swap positions. Otherwise nothing happens, corresponding to a loop in the Markov chain. This is the circular TASEP. We compute the average proportion of time the chain spends at the identity permutation (and, in greater generality, at sorted words)...

[texts]Near infra-red Mueller matrix imaging system and application to strain imaging - Lars Martin Sandvik Aas
We report on the design and performance of a near infra-red Mueller matrix imaging ellipsometer, and apply the instrument to strain imag- ing in near infra-red transparent solids. Particularly, we show that the instrument can be used to investigate complex strain domains in multi-crystalline silicon wafers.

[texts]Effects of composition and chemical disorder on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Fe_{x}Pt_{1-x} alloys - C. J. Aas
We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of the L1_{0}-like Fe_{x}Pt_{1-x} samples studied experimentally by Barmak and co-workers in [J. Appl. Phys. 98 (2005) 033904]. The variation of composition and long-range chemical order in the samples was studied in terms of the coherent potential approximation. In accordance with experimental observations, we find that, in the presence of long-range chemical disorder, Fe-rich samples exhibit a larger MAE...

[image]American Astronomical Society Sets Goals for Improving Gender Equity in Astronomy - *Credit:* NASA [ http://www.nasa.gov/ ], AAS, and STScI [ http://www.stsci.edu/ ]
*Description*: The American Astronomical Society (AAS) has endorsed a new set of recommendations to improve the status of gender equity in astronomy. The recommendations, endorsed at the 205th meeting of the Society in San Diego from January 8 to 13, 2005, were prepared by the Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy (CSWA). The recommendation document, entitled Equity Now: The Pasadena Recommendations for Gender Equality in Astronomy is available at http://www.aas.org/~cswa [ htt...

[texts]Effect of stacking faults on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of hcp Co: a first-principles study - C J Aas
In terms of the fully relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we investigate the effect of stacking faults on the magnetic properties of hexagonal close-packed cobalt. In particular, we consider the formation energy and the effect on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of four different stacking faults in hcp cobalt -- an intrinsic growth fault, an intrinsic deformation fault, an extrinsic fault and a twin-like fault...

[texts]Fast and optimal broad-band Stokes/Mueller polarimeter design by the use of a genetic algorithm - Paul Anton Letnes
A fast multichannel Stokes/Mueller polarimeter with no mechanically moving parts has been designed to have close to optimal performance from 430-2000 nm by applying a genetic algorithm. Stokes (Mueller) polarimeters are characterized by their ability to analyze the full Stokes (Mueller) vector (matrix) of the incident light. This ability is characterized by the condition number, $\kappa$, which directly influences the measurement noise in polarimetric measurements...

[texts]Magnetic anisotropy of FePt: effect of lattice distortion and chemical disorder - C. J. Aas
We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the five L10 FePt samples studied experimentally by Ding et al. [J. App. Phys. 97, 10H303 (2005)]. The effect of temperature-induced spin fluctuations is estimated by scaling the MAE down according to previous Langevin dynamics simulations. Including chemical disorder as given in experiment, the experimental correlation between MAE and lattice mismatch is qualitatively well reproduced...

[texts]New Discoveries in Planetary Systems and Star Formation through Advances in Laboratory Astrophysics - AAS WGLA
As the panel on Planetary Systems and Star Formation (PSF) is fully aware, the next decade will see major advances in our understanding of these areas of research. To quote from their charge, these advances will occur in studies of solar system bodies (other than the Sun) and extrasolar planets, debris disks, exobiology, the formation of individual stars, protostellar and protoplanetary disks, molecular clouds and the cold ISM, dust, and astrochemistry...

[texts]Nuclear structure of Ac-231 - R. Boutami
The low-energy structure of 231Ac has been investigated by means of gamma ray spectroscopy following the beta-decay of 231Ra. Multipolarities of 28 transitions have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a mini-orange electron spectrometer. The decay scheme of 231Ra --> 231Ac has been constructed for the first time. The Advanced Time Delayed beta-gamma-gamma(t) method has been used to measure the half-lives of five levels...
